Blur frontman Damon Albarn and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett of "Tank Girl" fame meant no monkey business when they created virtual band Gorillaz in 1998 after feeling unimpressed by what they saw on MTV one night. The cartoon characters they conjured up were their own commentary on the lack of substance on the famous music channel. In the videos resembling animated short films, we meet the fictional characters that make up the band: 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Albarn steps away from Blur's Britpop to create an urban music with an eccentric twist that feeds on hip-hop, electronica, and world music. This blend is reflected in its many collaborators, including Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash, Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, and more recently Grace Jones and Mavis Staples. The self-titled debut album, released in 2001, sold over 7 million copies and was followed by Demon Days (2005), Plastic Beach (2010), The Fall (2011) and the long-awaited Humanz, which dropped in spring 2017. While rumors of a full-length feature have died down, a 10-episode animated series recounting the characters' adventures, music and other, is in the works. A visual feast, Gorillaz remains way ahead of its time. Don't miss them at Lolla(z).
